LONDON, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Network Rail, the main owner and operator of British rail infrastructure, on Monday announced a five-year 38 billion pounds (63 billion U.S. dollars) spending and investment program to upgrade the rail system.

More than 1.5 billion passenger journeys are made by rail each year, Network Rail said in a press release. And by 2019, the railway will be carrying more people than at any time in its history.

"Millions of people across the country are set to benefit from" the ambitious investment plan, said Network Rail.

The rail industry's five-year plan will include providing capacity for 170,000 extra seats for commuters at peak time, shorten journeys and provide for hundreds more daily services between cities of the north, electrify more than 850 miles of railway and see whole new fleets of electric trains.
