No Broncos’ defender will benefit more from the switch to Fangio’s Defense than safety Justin Simmons." Denver Broncos Roster2019 Broncos roster review: Safety Justin SimmonsNew Shannon Sharpe Jersey ,29commentsNo Broncos’ defender will benefit more from the switch to Fangio’s Defense than safety Justin Simmons. MDTDrafted in the third round of the 2016 draft, Justin Simmons had an impressive rookie season under then-defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Simmons never really materialized into the superior safety we all hoped when Joe Woods took over the defense under new head coach Vance Joseph in 2017. optimistic that he’ll benefit from the Vic Fangio defense as much or more than any other member of the 2019 Denver Broncos. The goodWatching Simmons’ 2018 tape, I was immediately struck by the sheer variety of his assignments from down to down. On any given play, he could line up as a deep safety in a single or two high shell, or play in the box, or even line up in the slot. It seems simple on the surface, but each of those carries significantly different keys and responsibilities. Wherever he lined up, Simmons shined as a run defender last year. Most defensive backs aren’t looking to mix it up in the muck with the hogs, but that isn’t Simmons. He stood out as a force player who would work to constrict alleys and reroute the ball back to his help inside, using his long arms to keep blockers off his body. Coming downhill from single or two high, he also maintained good angles to the ball carrier and showed he could consistently contribute as a tackler https://www.broncosfanstore.com/Peyton-Manning-Jersey , even against bigger backs. Plays like this aren’t flashy until the defensive player fails to hem in a ball carrier. When Simmons played against the pass, he excelled playing the robber. From there, his range and anticipation really flashed. He showed off his route recognition, ball skills, and athleticism to squeeze off receivers when he didn’t have to play over the top or mirror in single coverage. Simmons also looked reliable in trail technique playing out of the slot and could stay on a receiver’s hip out into the route. In fact, Simmons was far and away the best safety in man coverage last year. The fourth-year safety also has the kind of straight line speed and range to be an effective player in deep zone or bailing out from close to the line of scrimmage. It’s a shame the Joseph Broncos didn’t ask Simmons to do this more often. The badThe biggest problem Simmons has as a football player is something he’ll have trouble ever completely fixing - he’s a gazelle. His frame and long legs leads to some problems for him changing directions suddenly or stopping on a dime. This issue presents itself most often when Simmons is lined up in coverage on a single receiver. It also hurts his deep range and causes him to overplay some tackles because he overruns the ball before he’s able to get his weight under him. Double moves were a huge issue for Simmons in coverage. Against the run, Simmons’ lighter frame also creates some issues. He’ll give ground to blockers as he works to shed them and can give up yards after contact to the bigger backs he tackles. He’s also more of a dart-and-dodge kind of blitzer than a defender who will go through a blocker to impact the quarterback. In coverage, he can be boxed out by bigger receivers.Simmons overplays Locket’s angle here and can’t shift back to recover. QuotableDuring OTAs, Simmons expressed his genuine excitement to be part of the Vic Fangio experiment.Justin Simmons’ roster status with the BroncosOne thing that becomes painfully apparent is how miscast Simmons was in the Vance Joseph defense. The Broncos utilized man coverage more than any team but New England in 2018 and Simmons was routinely asked to cover a slot or tight end. This exposed his biggest weakness and leaned away from his strengths as a player. He was also asked to blitz quite regularly, which is a poor use of his skill set. Vic Fangio’s system will provide Simmons with more opportunities to play as a deep safety or work out of the a robber role with help over the top. This should play off his strengths and hide the weaker parts of his game far more effectively. If he can stay healthy, there’s plenty of reason to believe that 2019 will be Simmons’ best in the NFL. Who is your favorite Broncos 2019 draft pick?Good morning, Broncos Country! What a difference two years makes. There was talk that John Elway and the Denver Broncos couldn’t buy a good NFL Draft ... even if they had the winning numbers at their disposal. Now, it seems Elway and the Broncos have found the codex. Yes, we still need to see the 2019 class get on the field and play some games, and even see last year’s class put another season together, but most everyone agrees that Elway and Co. nailed it two-straight years. Aside from setting the franchise up to “win from now on,” it allows us to have some fun. On the latest MHR Radio Podcast (iTunes, Spotify and Stitcher), Adam Malnati and I were fortunate to have Trevor Sikkema on to review what the Broncos did last week. The guy with WiFi (as he says on his Twitter bio) from The Draft Network, really loved what Elway and Denver did, and how the draft was navigated. So Adam followed up by asking Trevor: Who is your favorite player the Broncos picked? “I think it’s Drew Lock Shane Ray Jersey ,” Trevor said. “I think it’s Lock just because (Elway) got him at 42. I mean, I thought Drew Lock was going Top 10, man. And to get him all the way at 42 ... that’s a home run to me. You’re almost never able to sit back that far in your seat and get the quarterback you want. And I think they really did want Drew Lock. But I guess we thought they wanted him more than they really did because they had the opportunity to pick Drew Lock at 20 and didn’t. So they must have really really trusted their intel. “And I think that’s a key part to the draft and how you navigate it. You’ve got to have good intel on what other teams are going to do because if you’re sitting there at 20 and you know you don’t pick for another 20 picks, and we’re talking about a quarterback that you want, for you to just let him by at 20, pick a tight end and be like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to roll the dice and hopefully Drew Lock will be there.’ That’s tough to do. That takes some balls as a GM. That’s why I’ll say the Drew Lock pick was the most impressive one because of the intel they must have had on the other teams that weren’t going to move up or they weren’t going to be too aggressive for Lock. And then certainly taking their time and picking him where it almost seemed like this was the last chance they were going to have to pick him. “But they got it done and they got their guy. So anytime you can do something like that ... I think it’s a win for the fit. It’s a win for the player. And a certainly a win for how they navigated the draft.”It’s hard to argue with Trevor, and we all hope Denver is Locked and Loaded at the quarterback position. For me, it’s Dalton Risner. You not only bring home the Colorado kid and Broncos fan, you get a guy who can alter the offensive line for the foreseeable future. You then pair Risner with Mike Munchak and Chris Kuper? Holy smokes! Of course you throw in the quality person Risner is https://www.broncosfanstore.com/Shelby-Harris-Jersey , and as I said last week, he exemplifies what a Pat Bowlen Bronco is. Broncos Country can now Rise Up and celebrate Colorado’s own coming home with this awesome shirt from BreakingT.It’s fun to talk about the success of the last two drafts, but also think about the future of the Broncos. What a difference two years makes. MHR Radio is now on iTunes, iHeartRadio, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher,TuneIn and anywhere else you get your podcasts.
